It’s funny, when I was in college my friend Lauren and I collaborated on a project about grandparents raising grandchildren. As a young college student back then I never knew how near and dear to my heart this subject would end up being. Of course my husband and I are the primary caregivers of our children, but we are certainly not doing it without the help of their grandparents, especially my mom.
As Mother’s Day approaches I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to write a letter to her for all of the thankless work she’s done for our family over the years.
Dear Mom
I want to start off by saying thank you. Even though those words seem empty given all you’ve done for us. When I first had Lyla I was terrified to do anything with her because I was so unsure of myself and my new role as mom. You gave me the courage I needed when I couldn’t find it in myself. Those first few months (hell, years) of being a mom are terrifying, but knowing I always have you to count on makes it a little easier.
Over the years you have selflessly dedicated your time, money, patience, and love to our family. Almost every free moment you’ve had (in between working two jobs) has been spent with your grandchildren. I know how overwhelming life can be, but you know what matters most in life and for you that’s your family.
Although you lost your mother at a young age and didn’t have her with you to guide you through some of your toughest years, you sure turned out to be one hell of a hard working and amazing mom. It just goes to show that you are capable of doing anything and that you don’t need to rely on anyone to be great. Something I hope you remember each day of your life.
I Am Who I Am Because Of You
Everything from my sweet tooth to my work ethic I can trace back to you. When I can’t or won’t stop thinking about something until I get it or get it done, I know that comes from you. I’m thankful to have learned from you that if you want something you have to work for it, not wish for it. You work yourself into exhaustion just so that you can afford to continue to support your children and grand children. You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for, mama.
I know there are things that you wished were different. I know you hold on to issues from your childhood and your past. But, what I want you to realize is that without having gone through those things you wouldn’t be the woman or the mother you are today. You love your children fiercely because you know what it felt like not to have an overly loving father who told you that every day.
Even though you know your father loved you, I know you wished you heard it more. But, be grateful for the father he was for you growing up because he made you the mother you are now. Your love and support for your children and grandchildren is unwavering and you never let a day go by without us knowing that.
Your life’s work of raising your children is something that should make you incredibly proud. Despite any challenges that you’ve faced in life since having children, your love for us remained at the forefront. We have never had to question whether we’ve made you proud or if you love us. We always knew we’d be okay because we always knew we had you as our mom.
Before I go I want you to remember one thing:
We love you, mom!
